Missing Van Gogh painting recognized in Amsterdam

A genuine long-lost Vincent Van Gogh's landscape painting has finally been identified by Amsterdam's Van Gogh Museum, after years of doubts over its authenticity.

The work, entitled 'Sunset at Montmajour', which depicts trees, bushes and sky, was discovered from a Norwegian private collector's house, where he had stashed away the painting in the attic since he was under the impression that the painting was fake, the BBC reported.

The museum's rep said that the painting that is the first full-size canvas by Van Gogh discovered since 1928, was authenticated by letters, style and the physical materials used.

Axel Rueger, the Museum director, called the find "once-in-a-lifetime experience".

Rueger said that the institution had previously rejected the painting's authenticity in the 1990s partly since it was not signed.

But, after a two-year investigation using new research techniques, it was concluded that the artwork was by the artist.

Researcher Teio Meedendorp said that he and his fellow researchers had found answers to all the key questions, which is remarkable for a painting that has been lost for more than 100 years.
