A new survey has revealed that people purposefully lie about reading classic books, to appear more intellectual and wise.

The poll, which was conducted on 2,000 people, found that over 50 percent of the respondents displayed unfinished books on their shelves, the Guardian reported.

According to the survey, most of the books that were left unread were the books that were most often filmed, talked about and studied in school.

Also, the top 10 books people claim to read but haven't are:

1. '1984' by George Orwell (26 percent)

2. 'War and Peace' by Leo Tolstoy (19 percent)
