Nehru anniversary event row: BJP calls Congress' behavior puerile

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday termed the Congress' behavior of not inviting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the centenary celebrations of Jawaharlal Nehru as puerile.

"If at all Congress wants to fight with the Bharatiya Janata Party, then it should be on the basis of performance. The way it is behaving is completely puerile and childlike," BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra told ANI.

"To invite or not to invite though it is their domain, but they should realize one thing that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the Prime Minister of India and not of the Bharatiya Janata Party," he added.

Terming the incident as ironical, he said the Congress spokespersons and leaders are deriving sadistic pleasure with their remarks.

Congress leader Rashid Alvi had earlier said that his party did not invite Prime Minister Modi as it only wanted to invite 'like-minded' people.

The conference on Nehru, which is to take place from November 17-18, will be attended by leaders of various political parties from India and abroad.

Congress leader Anand Sharma had earlier announced that the conference will discuss Nehru's view on democracy, inclusion, empowering India and representative global order.

The conference will be chaired by party chief Sonia Gandhi.
