Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was on Sunday elected as the new chief of Janata Dal United JD (U).

The JD(U) has elected its new president in its National Council meeting, bringing an end to the over 10-year long tenure of Sharad Yadav, who has decided not to seek a fourth consecutive term.

Yadav, who had been serving as the party chief for the last three terms, resigned from the post today and is unlikely to contest for a fourth term.

As per reports, the JD (U) is planning for an expansion before Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, which is slated to be held next year and Nitish Kumar has been unanimously selected to lead the party.
