The Pentagon has said that it has not been asked by the White House to conduct a review of its strategy to defeat the Islamic State (IS), despite the fall of Ramadi to that terror outfit.

Fox News quoted an official, as saying that the Pentagon "continuously" reviews its strategy and at present it was felt that no major review was required.

Another official said that the Obama Government was planning to arm Sunni tribes to help retake Ramadi from the IS, following the example of the 'Anbar Awakening,' when 30 tribes united in 2006 and defeated Al Qaeda in Iraq with support from the U.S military.

But these arms would not go directly to the Sunni tribes, confirmed one defence official.

Pentagon officials have confirmed that their operation to retake Mosul, Iraq's second largest city, has been delayed after the capture of Ramadi by the IS.

In February, the U.S. Central Command had announced that an operation involving some 25,000 Iraqi troops would take place in April and May.
