Phase 3 metro stations of Delhi metro to be rated to judge compatibility with green building norms

All Metro stations of Delhi Metro's upcoming Phase 3 along with other Metro stations across the nation will be rated to judge their compatibility with green building norms.

This will help the Metros systems to design their stations as eco friendly structures and utilize natural resources such as sunlight more effectively.

The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), a body involved in promoting the Green Building concept in India, will be conducting this rating process. They will also issue guidelines for designing the station structures as green buildings.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has decided to be actively involved with this initiative as such rating will help a lot in encouraging the concept of green buildings not only in Metro systems but all infrastructure projects in the country.

The first Expert Committee meeting of IGBC with this objective was organized today at the Delhi Metro headquarters. The meeting was attended by DMRC's Managing Director, Sh. Mangu Singh, IGBC's Chairman, Sh. PC Jain, IGBC's Delhi Chapter Chief, Sh. Arun Bhatia and other senior officials.

This rating process will especially help the upcoming Metro projects to design their stations according to green building norms and later apply for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), which is a globally accepted green building certification programme that recognizes the best-in class building strategies and practices.

Taking a lead in this regard, DMRC has already announced that all the stations of its third phase of expansion along with 12 Receiving Sub Stations and residential quarters will be designed as green buildings. Green buildings help in better preservation of the environment as in such structures there are provisions for better saving of energy, water and CO2. Such buildings also have better waste management arrangements.

Many new cities across the country have decided to implement Metro systems. Apart from Kolkata and Delhi, Metro systems are also operational at Bengaluru and Mumbai. Many other cities such as Jaipur, Kochi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Pune etc will also have Metro corridors in the years to come. In such a scenario, this initiative is expected to prove very beneficial for the better preservation of the environment.
