A criminal law expert has said that there could be a few 'surprises' on the opening day of the trial of Paralympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius for the murder of his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day last year.

Pistorius' murder trial will start on Monday at the North Gauteng High Court.

According to News24, criminal law expert William Booth said that he believes the trial will bring some surprises on the first day as it is not yet known what the legal team of the Blade Runner will be doing exactly.

The report mentioned that the State will put in the plea to Pistorius and the Paralympian would then have to plead to those charges, adding that the initial indictment lists 107 witnesses to testify for the State.

Among the witnesses are Pistorius' sister Aimee, his uncle Arnold, former police investigator Hilton Botha, and residents of the Silver Woods Country Estate in Pretoria, where he lived, the report added.
