The chief of South Yorkshire Police has expressed regret over the "insensitive" handling of a search of Sir Cliff Richard's home.

In the humiliating apology, David Crompton admitted that his force was "naive" in the way they handled the case, including allowing BBC to film his officers carrying out the raid, which made them look "heavy-handed and intrusive", the Daily Express reported.

However, he admitted that investigation could never be done in a low-profile way as it was "fatally compromised" from the outset.

The 73-year-old music legend has been interviewed under caution by police, but not charged, after it was claimed that he had allegedly sexually assaulted on a boy at a religious event in 1985.
