Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday extended his condolences to the family of a farmer, who committed suicide after being unable to repay the loans he had taken.
The official twitter account of Gandhi's office shared the Amethi MP's thoughts.
"Extremely sad to hear of the death of Sardar Surjit Singh who I met when I visited Punjab. My deepest condolences to his family. (1/2)," the office posted.
"Farmers in our country are in deep distress.I urge the Modi-Badal Govt to take action ¬ continue to ignore their plight:Rahul Gandhi(2/2)," it added.
Sardar Surjit Singh, who had reportedly briefed Gandhi during his visit to Punjab on the plight of the farming community, committed suicide in Fatehgarh Sahib district's Dadu Majra village on Wednesday.
According to reports, his wheat crop was destroyed by the unseasonal rain in March and April.
