Outgoing Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat on Sunday took responsibility for the Congress' dismal show in the state and said that it was his shortcomings that he could not lead the grand old party on the path of success.
"I accept my defeat and take the responsibility for downfall of the Congress Party. I could not lead my party on the path of success. I take responsibility. The debacle was a result of my shortcomings," he told ANI.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won with a clear majority in the state with 57 seats in the70-member assembly, ousting the Congress led by Rawat.
The Congress bagged just 11 seats.
Rawat lost from both the Haridwar (Rural) and Kichcha seats.
Over 68 percent of the electorate voted in the Uttarakhand Polls 2017.
The assembly polls were being seen as a referendum on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's popularity and his reforms agenda, particularly demonetisation.
