Serena survives scare to reach Rogers Cup second round

World number one Serena Williams bounced back from a set down to beat her Italian opponent Flavin Pennetta in three sets in the opening round of the Rogers Cup in Toronto on Wednesday.

The American top seed displayed tremendous level of resilience to overcome Pennetta 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 in a thrilling contest that lasted one hour and 38 minutes.

Serena, the 21-time Grand Slam winner, will next take on either Heather Watson or No 16 seed Andrea Petkovic in the second round.
