The State's case in the murder trial of Anni Dewani is looking increasingly weak as its key witness, taxi driver Zola Tongo, continues to admit mistakes and inconsistencies during cross-examination, a report said.

Tongo faced grueling and detailed questioning from British millionaire Shrien Dewani's defence counsel, Advocate Francois van Zyl, as he was summoned to the witness stand for the fourth day on Thursday, reported News 24.

Tongo had claimed earlier that he drove the newlywed couple from the airport to the Cape Grace Hotel. He said that Dewani asked him later if he could do a "job" for him which involved killing his business partner, who later turned out to be his wife. The taxi driver then consulted his friend, Monde Mbolombo who arranged the hitmen for the job.

Tongo is currently serving his 18-year sentence for his role in the murder of Anni Dewani, in an allegedly staged hijacking during their honeymoon in Cape Town in November 2010.
