Sri Lanka taking measures to prevent human trafficking, irregular migration

Sri Lanka has told the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) that the country is taking measures to prevent all forms of irregular migration, smuggling in persons and human trafficking.

According to ColomboPage.com, Sri Lanka's Permanent Representative to UN in Geneva, Ambassador Ravinatha Aryasinha spoke about the issue after the opening remarks by the Special Rapporteur (SR) on the human rights of migrants, François Crepeau at the 29th session of UNHRC.

Aryasinha claimed that the government is taking action against the traffickers under due process and treating the migrants as victims of smugglers.

The Ambassador emphasised on Sri Lanka's commitment to cooperate with the Special Rapporteur "in the spirit of open and constructive engagement.
