A ten-day-long tribal food festival was recently organized on the banks of Brahmaputra here, with many tribes of the North-eastern region participating in the event.

Food enthusiasts got a chance to taste the indigenous delicacies of various tribes like Tai-Ahom, Mishing, Naga and Bodo. Rice beer and different preparations of fish, pork, chicken and crabs were the major attractions at the festival.

Dilip Tamuli, who is visiting the festival, said that people are taking a keen interest in the North-eastern food in recent times.

"Actually this is a very good sign. Till 5 to 10 years ago people didn't know about the local food of North-east or Assam. Now slowly it's coming out. People are using local recipes instead of making use of national and international recipes. Promoting this kind of food gives a new kind of income sources to the people," Tamuli said.

Such festivals also give an opportunity to the tribal women to sell their food and earn extra money.
