The Met department on Wednesday attributed the incessant rains in coastal parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, which has thrown normal life out of gear, to a low pressure area built up over Sri Lanka and North Tamil Nadu.

Regional Meteorological Director S R Ramanan said rains are likely to continue in most parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry as the low pressure area will persist.

"Yesterday's low pressure of Sri Lanka and North Tamil Nadu persists. Because of it has rained in most parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Some three districts, northernmost most districts of Channai, Kanchipuram and Thiruvallur have experienced extremely heavy rainfall. Tambaram recorded highest rainfall of 49 cms followed by 47 cms in Chembarambakkam," Ramanan told media here.

"As far as forecast for next 24 hours is concerned, it is likely to rain in most parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. One of two places may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall," he added.

Earlier, IMD Director General L S Rathore said that although the intensity of rain will lessen after 72 hours, it will continue to pour for about a week.

Many parts of Chennai and the suburbs have been flooded from the incessant rains that have hit the city in the past 24 hours, amidst the worst ever flood situation in Tamil Nadu.

The water has entered inside houses in the low-lying areas of Anna nagar and there is water-logging in almost every part of the city.

The flight operations at the Chennai Airport have been closed for the whole day because of the flooded water on the runway.
