Former union home secretary and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader R.K. Singh on Wednesday said that Donald Trump is a protectionist and does not believe in free and open trade.
Singh told ANI," Donald Trump is a protectionist, he believes that the import from outside should be less, and the requirements of America should be made in America. He wants less input from outside,"
"Trump doesn't seem to have secular outlook, and for the world economy, it is alarming. His involvement in internal affairs will be less," he added.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Donald Trump on being elected as the 45th United States President and asserted that he looks forward to working with him to elevate India-US bilateral ties.
Taking to twitter, the Prime Minister extended his wishes to the triumphant president-elect.
"We appreciate the friendship you have articulated towards India during your campaign. We look forward to working with you closely to take India-US bilateral ties to a new height," he said.
After the media exploded with Trump's victory, Trump took to the stage and pledged to begin the "urgent task of rebuilding our nation" while also bringing Americans together.
Speaking at his victory party in a New York hotel ballroom, Trump said Democratic rival Hillary Clinton called him to concede the race.
"I just received a call from Secretary Clinton," Mr. Trump said, "She congratulated us-this is about us-on our victory, and I congratulated us-this is about us-on our victory, and I congratulated her and her family on a very, very hard-fought campaign," Trump said.
Trump's surprising performance at the polls ended Hillary Clinton's quest to make history as the first female president of the United States.
The 70-year-old celebrity businessman who had never before run for office, is poised to become the oldest president ever elected to a first term.
