It has been reported that a month before Donald Trump clinched the Republican nomination, House majority Leader Kevin McCarthy had made a politically explosive statement, saying that Trump could be the beneficiary of payments from Russian President Vladimir Putin.
McCarthy, one of Trump's closet allies in Congress, made this assertion in a private conversation on Capitol Hill with his fellow GOP leaders.
According to the Washington Post, McCarthy said that he thinks there two whom Putin pays - Rohrabacher and Trump.
Both McCarthy and House Speaker Paul D. Ryan had emerged from separate talks at the Capitol with Ukrainian Prime Minister Vladimir Groysman, who had elaborated about the Kremlin tactic of financing populist politicians to undercut Eastern European democratic institutions.
The conversation shows that the Republican leadership in the House was aware of the Russia's involvement in the 2016 election as the Russian government hackers had penetrated into the computer network of Democratic National Committee and Trump's relationship to President Putin.
