Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, has said that if he was elected as the president of the United States, he would instruct the attorney general to "investigate" Hillary Clinton and to put her behind bars for using her personal and unsecured email server during her tenure as secretary of state.

Speaking at the second presidential debate in St Louis in front of millions of viewers, Trump told the Democrat that she should be "ashamed of herself" for deleting 33,000 emails, reports the Independent.

Trump said he would appoint a special prosecutor to look into the matter because she had endangered national security while she served as President Barack Obama's chief diplomat from 2009-2013.

"I'm going to instruct my attorney general to get a special prosecutor to look into your situation," Trump said.

Responding to the Republican presidential nominee, Clinton said that her office had turned over 35,000 emails.

"That was a mistake and I take responsibility for using a personal email account," she said.

"I'm not making excuses," Hillary added.

Trump during the debate interrupted several times to say: "You would be in jail".

He also blamed the moderators of the debate for not focusing on the subject of Clinton's emails.

In return, Hillary accused Trump of "diversion tactics" to avoid speaking about his own campaign.

The democrat presidential nominee was investigated for using her personal and unsecured email server during her tenure as secretary of state. FBI director James Comey had accused Clinton of being "careless" but did not recommend any criminal charges.

The recommendation was followed by the attorney general's office and she was cleared of any wrongdoing.
