Coimbatore Police on Friday arrested two persons for allegedly spreading false rumours about the health of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on social networking sites

The accused, identified as Mani Selvam (28) and Bala Sundaram (42), are employees of Canara Bank.

The 68-year-old is undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospital in Chennai after she complained of fever and dehydration on September 22.

The accused were arrested after a member of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) lodged a complaint.

Defence counsel, Thangapandiyan, claimed his clients were arrested without concrete evidence.

"Two people were arrested for spreading rumours about the chief minister's health. Arrest is purely based on complaint filed by an AIADMK (All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) councilor but there is no evidence. I have filed a bail application for their release," Thangapandiyan told ANI.

The accused have been sent to 15 days judicial custody.
