Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is confident of continuing at the Old Trafford club till the next year, no matter what will be the result at the end of the season.

The Dutchman's job has been under scrutiny following his side's inconsistent performances in the Premier League and after the early exit from the Champions League. Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is being widely considered as the potential candidate to replace Van Gaal.

Fifth-placed United are still struggling to make a top four Premier League finish, but they have secured a place in the finals of the FA Cup after hammering Everton 2-1 at the Wembley Stadium.

Van Gaal revealed that he was keen to sign the club only for two years, but it was United who wanted to him to lead for three years.

"We always knew that the process would take three years. I wanted to sign only for two years. The club wanted me to sign for three years, not me. I signed for three years - so next year you will see me again," Van Gaal was quoted as saying by goal.com.

The 64-year-old, whose contract with the club expires in 2017, was also quick to defend his records since joining the club. He reiterated that United are better than last year as they made their way to the FA Cup finals and were in the Champions League.

"The fact is that we went further in the Capital One Cup. So there are a lot of pluses. Yes, we are in fifth and we are fighting for the one position that is the most important," he added.

Van Gaal further pointed out that his side have the best home record in the league, but admitted that there is still a room for improvement as far as away record is concerned.

United will aim to postpone top-ranked Leicester's hopes of clinching the title when they host the latter at Old Trafford later today.
