Opener David Warner and Usman Khawaja scored magnificent centuries to put Australia in a commanding position on the opening day of the first Test against New Zealand here on Thursday.

Opting to bat first, Australia posted a gigantic 389-2 at the end of the day's play with Khawaja and skipper Steve Smith at the crease on 102 and 41 respectively.

Earlier, attacking left handed opener smashed brilliant 163 runs to give his side a solid start, before getting dismissed by James Neesham.

His partner Joe Burns also contributed significant 71 runs for the home side.

The hosts would be eyeing for a mammoth first innings score when they will come on to bat on the second day whereas New Zealand would be hoping to restrict the former to as minimum as possible.

Australia will play second Test at Perth from November 13, followed by first day and night match at Adelaide from November 27.
