Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has advocated that the 'outdated' away goals rule should be changed following his team's failure to advance to Champions League quarterfinals.
Arsenal was knocked out of the tournament despite a 2-0 win over Monaco in their second-leg tie, but failed to progress after the team finished 3-3 on aggregate, which saw Monaco going into the last-8 on the basis of away goals rule.
Reflecting on the rule, Wenger said that it should be questioned as it is a rule that is outdated now and should be changed, adding that may be the rule should count after extra time, Sport24 reported.
Wenger further said that the rule was created in the 1960s to favour teams to attack away from home but since then football has changed and the weight of the away goal is too big today.
Similarly, Premier League pace-setters Chelsea also became a victim of the same rule as they drew 1-1 at Paris St Germain but were eliminated after a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge.
Arsenal will next meet Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday.
