World Health Day is being observed today. The objective of the day is to disseminate knowledge and awareness about human health.

The day focuses on increasing life expectancy by adding good health to the lives of people and promoting healthier living habits across the globe. This year the theme of the day is 'Beat Diabetes'.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also wished the nation on this occasion.

"On #WorldHealthDay I pray that all citizens across the world are blessed with good health & lead a life free from diseases & ailments. @WHO," he tweeted.

"Am glad that the @MoHFW_INDIA is launching key initiatives today that will make India healthier. #WorldHealthDay," he added.

Referring to World Health Day, Prime Minister Modi in his last month's 'Mann ki Baat' programme had called for eradicating diabetes from the country.

He had asked people to do Yoga and physical exercise to fight diabetes.

According to the World Health Organization, the number of adults over 35 years of age living with diabetes has nearly quadrupled to 422 million.

It said the world is facing an unrelenting march of the disease which now affects nearly one in every eleven people.

The report further said high blood sugar levels are a major killer and are a cause of 3.7 million deaths every year around the world.
