One Direction member Zayn Malik has shocked everyone after he quit his boy band amid their world tour, it has been revealed.

The 22-year-old singer, who quit the band after five years of their formation, said in an official statement that he would like to apologise to the fans if he had let anyone down, but he had to do what felt right in his heart, the Mirror reported.

The young pop singer continued that he was leaving because he wanted to be a normal 22-year-old who was able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight.

The remaining members of the group have reassured fans that their world tour and recording of their fifth album will still go ahead.

The band members said in a statement that they were really sad to see Malik go, but they totally respect his decision and send him all their love for the future.

Fans have also reacted with complete shock, despair and anger today after Malik revealed he was leaving the band.

One upset fan tweeted, "zayn malik has left one direction, nope I'm not crying i'm not i'm not (i am i really am and i need a cuddle and some chocolate) (sic)".

Now, Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson will continue as a four-piece band,

Simon Cowell also offered his support, while fellow 'X-Factor' judge Louis Walsh revealed the exit didn't surprise him.
