The United States has released 14 Pakistani prisoners from its custody at the Bagram prison in Afghanistan, Pakistan's foreign ministry said Saturday.
The freed prisoners have been repatriated to Pakistan, Xinhua quoted foreign ministry spokesperson Tasnim Aslam as saying. All the Pakistani prisoners of Bagram are believed to have been arrested either in Pakistan or Afghanistan.
It was the second group of Pakistanis released from the US custody in a month. A group of nine Pakistani nationals were freed from Bagram last month.
Officials say the releases were part of an ongoing process to repatriate all Pakistanis detained at Bagram. This is the largest tranche of releases from Bagram yet.
With this current tranche, 39 Pakistanis have been released from Bagram in the past ten months. However, it is still unclear that how many Pakistanis remain in indefinite detention in Bagram prison, since no official list has been provided since 2012.
Foreign ministry had no confirmed number of the prisoners still languishing at Bagram. "Information not readily available," Aslam said.
