24-year-old ITI student lynched in Bengal

A 24-year-old ITI student was lynched by a mob suspecting him to be a cattle thief in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district, police said on Tuesday.

The incident happened at Diamond Harbour on Monday evening.

According to the police, Koushik Purakait had come to visit his relatives in Harindanga in Diamond Harbour.

Purakait was thrashed by the locals who suspected him of stealing a buffalo.

"The victim's family has named 10 people in their complaint. So far no arrest has been made," said a police officer.

The father of the victim alleged police inaction.

"My son would have been alive if the police had acted in time. While my son lay bleeding, some of the attackers demanded Rs.one lakh from us," said the father.
