Mexican authorities unearthed 28 bodies from a clandestine grave in the Gulf Coast state of Veracruz, media reported Thursday.

A prosecutor for Veracruz state said Wednesday that the mass grave was found at a ranch known as El Diamante, on the border between the towns of Tres Valles and Cosamaolapan, Xinhua reported.

According to officials, the 28 were executed due to clashes between rival criminal groups operating in Veracruz.

Some of the bodies were buried more than a month back, the officials said.
