Over 30,000 health workers in Haryana Friday took a pledge to save the girl child. The pledge was taken across the state at the same time, an official said here.

A health department spokesman said the pledge was taken to change the mindset of people to protect girls by stopping female foeticide.

Health workers from all levels participated in the pledge-taking ceremony.

Haryana has the worst sex ratio among all the states in the country. Haryana's sex ratio stands at just 879 females per 1,000 males.

The move comes ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi launching the 'Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao' programme from Haryana in Panipat on Jan 22.

Haryana has been chosen for the launch of the campaign to save daughters due to its poor record.

Modi has, in the past, pointed out that of the 15 worst districts in the country in terms of sex ratio, nine were in Haryana.
