576 security personnel killed in one year

A total of 576 personnel from central security wings and state police forces have either been killed or met with an unnatural end while at work between Sep 1, 2012 and Aug 31, 2013.

Of the 576 personnel, 420 were from different state police forces, 129 from paramilitary forces, one from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), 10 from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), two from the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and 14 from the Railway Protection Force (RPF).

On the occasion of Commemoration Day in the capital Monday, Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi read out the list of personnel who were killed or met with unnatural deaths during this period.

Among the policemen who died the list had 17 personnel from Delhi Police, one from Andhra Pradesh, four from Assam, two from Andaman and Nicobar, 29 from Bihar, one from Chandigarh, 37 from Chhattisgarh, 13 from Gujarat, five from Himachal Pradesh and two from Haryana.

There were 13 police personnel from Jammu and Kashmir who were either killed or died in some other unnatural manner. Forty policemen from Jharkhand, 17 from Karnataka, seven from Madhya Pradesh, three from Maharashtra, five from Manipur, five from Nagaland, six from Odisha, two from Pondicherry, 12 from Punjab, two from Rajasthan, three from Tamil Nadu, 117 from Uttar Pradesh, 25 from Uttarakhand and 52 from West Bengal police also met abrupt ends.

Apart from the state police forces list, 55 Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, 13 from Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), 45 from Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), eight from Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and eight from Seema Suraksha Bal (SSB) were also listed as having died of unnatural causes or being killed.

Ashif Ibrahim, director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and retired Delhi Police Commissioners Subhash Tandon, M.B. Kaushal, T.R. Kakkar and Neeraj Kumar paid homage to the martyrs by laying wreaths at the memorial in the Police Lines in Delhi along with other senior officials.

Commemoration Day is observed every year Oct 21 in the memory of 10 personnel of the CRPF who were ambushed and killed by Chinese forces in the Ladakh region Oct 21, 1959.
