Hours after the AAP blamed police and media for Wednesday's chaos, police Thursday registered cases against AAP leaders for unlawful assembly outside the airport and violating other laws.
The Sahar Airport police lodged the cases under against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal and other party activists.
According to police, hundreds of AAP supporters thronged the airport to welcome and receive Kejriwal in violation of the prohibitory orders enforced in that area.
The Mumbai traffic police has earlier imposed penalties of Rs.500 on three autorickshaw drivers under the Motor Vehicles Act, including the one in which Kejriwal commuted from the airport to Andheri police station Wednesday morning.
They were accused of flouting the norms of not carrying more than three passengers as over-enthusiastic AAP activists were seen hanging onto the dozen-odd autorickshaws and subsequently creating traffic jams outside Andheri station.
Police said that they would also forward the case details to the Election Commission as the model code of conduct is currently in force.
Kejriwal arrived here Wednesday on a three-day election campaign visit to Maharashtra during which he commuted in an auto and later a local train, took part in a road show and addressed a huge public rally even as normal life in Mumbai was disturbed.
On Thursday, he cancelled his scheduled election public meeting in Chandrapur as he fell ill.
He departed for Nagpur later Thursday to host a Rs.10,000 a plate gala dinner at a deluxe hotel in the state's second capital, to raise funds for his party.
