AGP slams Rahul Gandhi after WikiLeaks revelation

Assam's regional political party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) Tuesday slammed Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi for his comments on the regional party a few years ago, which were released by WikiLeaks recently.

Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters in Guwahati, AGP secretary Durga Das Boro said that the party was contemplating legal action against Rahul Gandhi for making such a comment on the Assam's regional party, which formed the government in the state for three terms since 1986.

Boro said that the WikiLeaks had recently revealed that "(Gandhi) had said that AGP leaders were insurgents and India allowed separatists to form the government in Assam and the United States should also allow Hamas."

Boro said that Rahul Gandhi had made the comments in February 2006 as per the Wikileaks revelation.

"Rahul Gandhi has been projected as the future Prime Minister of India and the statements made by him shows his pitiable condition and lack of knowledge about Assam and the northeast," said senior AGP leader Ramendra Narayan Kalita, who was also present on the conference.

"By equating the AGP with an insurgent outfit, Rahul Gandhi had not only insulted the six-year long non-violent students' movement in Assam but also hurt the 855 martyrs of the movement. The Assam movement had forced Rahul Gandhi's father late Rajiv Gandhi to sign the historic Assam Accord in 1985-marking an end of the six year long movement," Kalita said.
