Air passenger traffic up five percent in May

Domestic air passenger traffic increased 4.81 percent in May, the civil aviation ministry said Tuesday.

According to the data furnished by the ministry, domestic traffic in May stood at 57.10 lakh from 54.48 lakh passengers ferried during the corresponding month of last year, signifying an upswing in the civil aviation sector.

The passenger traffic had decreased 0.27 percent in April and stood at 50.77 lakh from 50.91 lakh.

The overall passengers carried by domestic airlines during January-May 2013 was marginally up 0.74 percent at 259.98 lakh from 258.08 lakh passenger ferried during the corresponding period of last year.

On a month-on-month basis, the traffic increased by 12.46 percent, as the domestic airlines carried 57.10 lakh passenger in the month under review from 50.77 lakh passengers ferried in April 2013.

On a standalone basis, IndiGo had the largest market share of 29.5 percent, followed by SpiceJet at 19.8 percent, Air India's domestic operations 19.1 percent, Jet Airways 17.1 percent, Go Air 9.00 percent and Jetlite 5.4 percent.
