The Congress' Assam unit chief, Ripun Bora, said on Friday he had urged Home Minister Rajnath Singh to action against the Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) for "imparting arms training to their workers" in the state.
The Rajya Sabha MP told the media here that he had written to Rajnath Singh to demand a high-level inquiry into what he called the unlawful activity of the two organisations that were dangerous to people's lives.
He demanded steps to prevent such training in future in the state.
In his letter dated July 26, released to the media on Friday, Bora said the Bajrang Dal and VHP, as part of their organisational work in Assam, recently imparted arms traning to their workers at Nalbari and Hojai respectively by violating the law.
Bora said he had sent along a video footage of arms training imparted to Bajrang Dal volunteers and women volunteers of 'Durga Vahini' of the VHP.
He said the footage had since been aired in electronic media in Assam but the state government had not taken any action.
"The two organisations have committed a serious offence by imparting training in arms and other lethal weapons to their workers. It is nothing but inciting and encouraging extremist activity," the Congress leader said.
"The training has been imparted with a certain motive of attacking rival parties. This will jeopardise peace and tranquility in the state," he added.
Bora claimed the state police and intelligence had failed to get advance information on the arms training.
