CPI-M leader Brinda Karat on Wednesday said that the "attack" on JNU was an attack on the constitutional rights of the people and demanded Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi's resignation.

"We know where the police commissioner is getting his orders from. The day the incident in JNU took place, it was Home Minister Rajnath Singh who said in a tweet that he had ordered Delhi's police commissioner to take action against anti-nationals in JNU," said Karat, who visited the JNU on Wednesday.

The Communist Party of India-Marxist politburo member said that apparently for the home minister, students expressing their opinions within university campus and within the framework of constitution were anti-national, but the lawyers attacking and abusing people inside court premises were great nationalists.

"We do not care for your nationalism. We challenge that nationalism. And therefore I believe this police commissioner has no right to stay in the office.

"The attack on JNU is an attack on our constitutional rights. It is an attack on the article 19 of the constitution which guarantees freedom of speech," said Karat, adding that the matter would be raised in parliament session beginning February 23.
