British diver spends two days under water

A British diver has set a new world record by spending more than two days under water.

Sean McGahern, 38, spent 49 hours and 56 minutes at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea in Malta, setting a new world record for the longest warm water scuba dive, reported the Daily Mail Friday.

McGahern managed to beat the previous record of 48 hours and eight minutes set by Will Goodman in 2010.

McGahern remained underwater despite facing strong winds, currents and one metre waves to complete the task. He also managed to eat, drink and sleep during his underwater stay.

During his time on the seabed, he cleaned up the debris deposited on the bottom of the sea floor at St George's Bay.

McGahern, originally from Brighton, East Sussex, was accompanied by his fiancee and fellow diver Mikaela Papagiorcopulo, who offered kisses to encourage him.
