Cold wave to continue in West Bengal for two days

For at least the next two days, there will be no respite from the biting cold that has gripped West Bengal, the Met Office said on Tuesday.

"Cold wave conditions will prevail for at least two-three days more," a Meteorological Department official said.

The day and night temperatures are likely to remain three to six notches below normal across the state, apart from Kolkata, the official said.

On Tuesday, Cooch Behar in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal recorded the lowest temperature of 5.8 degrees Celsius while neighbouring Jalpaiguri saw the mercury plummet to 5.9 degrees.

In the Gangetic plains, Nadia district's Krishnagar was the coldest at six degrees while Sriniketan in Birbhum recorded a low of 6.2 degrees Celsius.

In Kolkata, night temperatures rose to 11 degrees from Monday's 10.5 but the citizens seemed to struggle in equal measure with heavy woollens a regular sight on the streets.

School children and office-goers braved the harsh weather conditions in the morning when there was haze also along with the severe cold.
