The Congress on Monday criticised the BJP-led government over the release of Kashmiri separatist leader Masrat Alam, saying "instead of shedding crocodile tears, it must come out with a firm policy to deal with the situation".
Addressing a press conference here, Congress leader Randeep Surjewala said the prime minister cannot sacrifice national interest merely to retain power.
"The prime minister represents the entire country. Merely to retain power, the prime minister cannot sacrifice the national interest. That is the unmistakable impression going in the entire nation," he told reporters.
"Instead of shedding crocodile tears, the government must come out with a firm policy to deal with the situation."
He also expressed surprise over Modi's statement in parliament that his government was not consulted on the decision to release the separatist leader.
"The Congress was shocked by this lack of consultation," he said, asking Modi to clarify the issue.
Surjewala also asked the BJP to clarify its stance on article 370 and the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA).
The Congress leaders said MPs had a right to criticise the BJP as it was part of the ruling coalition in Jammu and Kashmir.
"But we should not say anything that sends a message that there were different voices about the country's unity," he said.
"We are not prepared to accept any compromise with the country's unity and integrity," he said.
