Crackdown on traffic offenders brings relief to Gurgaon

Smooth traffic movement can be seen on Gurgaon roads as traffic police challaned and fined over 55,000 vehicle owners for violating various traffic rules, the police said on Monday.

Besides, the police also towed over 400 vehicles and impounded over 1,000 auto-rickshaws in the past four days.

The special drive against offenders violating traffic rules on the city roads started a day after Police Commissioner Sandeep Khirwar assumed charge of his new posting on August 17.

The police on Monday issued 1,205 challans and towed away 115 vehicles.

On August 18 and 19, 1,040 auto-rickshaws were impounded and nearly 2,500 challans were issued.

The impact of impounding auto-rickshaws was so much that thousands of vehicles with incomplete necessary documents stopped plying.

According to an estimate, there are more than 25,000 CNG-run autos and 25,000 shared autos in Gurgaon.

Majority of shared autos cover old city area while CNG-run autos cover new Gurgaon.

A total of 3,297 challans were issued to offenders on Saturday and Sunday.

A special drive against wrong parking on Gugraon-Mehrauli (MG) road, which is also called Mall Male Road, was launched headed by two assistant commissioners of police.

Commissioner Khirwar said the drive is aimed to inculcate a sense of discipline among drivers to ensure better traffic understanding, management and safety of road users.

The police on Monday intensified the drive amid a threat of a strike by the auto-rickshaw union.

Several Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), industry bodies, NGOs and social activists have appreciated the traffic police initiatives.

"It may not suit a section of people but it is in the favour of wide public interest," an activist told IANS.

The police said the owners would be allowed to get back their vehicles only if they produced the valid documents.
