A crowdfunding campaign called "Jashn Kabaddi ka" was launched on Tuesday for the development of the country's traditional sport, close on the heels of India's recent Kabaddi World Cup triumph.
The campaign was initiated by Desiredwings.com and all the funds raised will be offered to the Indian national team players as a mark of respect and recognition. They can utilise the funds to provide better facilities for promising new players and development of the game, a release said.
"Kabaddi has begun gaining limelight in the world of sports and it is bound to flourish because it is a true sport that demands excellent athletic abilities. Moreover, Kabaddi is well known to every Indian, and if its scope widens, a lot of young athletes from even the remotest areas of the country will gain deserved platform," Indian Kabaddi team's captain Anup Kumar said in the release.
"With this campaign I urge people to join us and help raise awareness amongst more players - to remotest parts of the country. And help give players better facilities that will motivate youngsters to join Indian Kabaddi team".
Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh contributed Rs.5 lakh to the campaign.
"It's the right time to do our bit for Kabaddi, more so now that we have won the Kabaddi World Cup. While the entire nation has saluted their efforts, more needs to be done to encourage these players," Yuvraj Singh said.
"Being a sportsperson who has been a part of the World Cup winning team, I would like to make this contribution for the development of Kabaddi and encourage more players to take it up with passion and pride."
