DDC expresses concern about solid waste management

The Delhi Dialogue Commission (DDC) on Thursday expressed concern on the issue of solid waste management (SWM) at a day-long conference held at the Delhi Secretariat.

In the conference, Ghazipur land fill improvement and other such vulnerable land fill improvement plans were recommended to the Delhi government by the DDC.

The agenda of the conference, chaired by DDC vice-chairman Ashish Khetan, was to bring all stakeholders in SWM on a common platform to discuss the challenges and all potential solutions for consideration of the Delhi government.

"The Aam Aadmi Party government wants to encourage recycling by segregation of bio-degradable and non-biodegradable waste at the household level and also find a solution to the problem of littering or disposal of construction debris in public places," Khetan said.

The participants at the conference included national and international experts on waste management, MCD officials, Waste to Energy Plant representatives from Jindal Power Corporation, various representatives of the Civil Society, the Ministry of Environment and Urban Development and experts in the area of solid waste management.

The representatives of the waste management community and non-profit organisations working in the field of solid waste management voiced their concerns and opinions on the issue.

Formed under the leadership of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the DDC is meant to implement plans and fulfill the promises made by the ruling Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi.
