Defoe helps end Toronto's three-game losing streak

Striker Jermain Defoe scored his fourth goal of the season in Toronto FC's 2-0 victory over New York Red Bulls, their first win in three games, in Major League Soccer (MLS) action.

The goal Saturday was Defoe's first since being omitted from the England national team's 23-man roster earlier in the week, reports Xinhua.

"Obviously, the World Cup (omission) is still baffling and frustrating as to why I wasn't selected," said Defoe following the victory.

"It's only normal to get disappointed, trying to prove people wrong and remind people that this is what I'm doing."

In his first season in the MLS, the 31-year-old Londoner has scored four goals in five games.

"I've come over here and done exactly what I used to do at home and that's play well and score goals," Defoe said.

"I've just continued to do what I do; work hard and stay positive."

Despite the snub, the opportunity to represent England in Brazil next month is still a possibility for Defoe. He is one of seven players on the backup squad.

Toronto FC play three more games before a two-week break due to the World Cup beginning mid-June.
