World No.1 Novak Djokovic assured his place in the third round of the Madrid Open tennis tournament with a comfortable 6-2, 6-4 win over Croatian Borna Coric.
Djorkovic will play Spanish number 15 seed, Roberto Bautista Agut, who needed three sets to dispose of big serving Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 in a game lasting two hours and 27 minutes here on Wednesday, reports Xinhua.
Number six seed Kei Nishikori is also into the last 16 after a long match in which he finally defeated Fabio Fognini 6-2, 3-6, 7-5, but number four seed Stan Wawrinka suffered a surprise defeat 6-7(7), 6-7(2) to Nick Kygrios.
The surprises continue in the women's tournament with defending champions, Petra Kvitkova losing 3-6, 4-6 to Australian Daria Gavrilova, while number four seed Viktoria Azarenka was forced to retire through injury from her match against Louisa Chirico.
That leaves No.6 seed, Simone Haleb as the highest seeded player left in the tournament following her 6-3, 6-4 win over Timea Bacinszky, and she will have seen how No.8 seed Carla Suarez also crashed out after losing 6-4, 2-6, 3-6 to Australia's Samantha Stosur.
