Don't panic, don't buy onions in bulk, says Delhi government

The Delhi government on Friday appealed to people not to panic over the feared shortage of onions and not to buy the vegetable in bulk as this could lead to further rise in prices.

However, it pleaded its helplessness in curbing the prices, saying that the city was only dependent on the supply from Maharashtra's Nashik where prices have increased too.

"There is no shortage of onions. We appeal to the people not to panic. Those who were buying half a kilo onion are now buying two kilos. Because of this prices will further hike," said Transport and Rural Development Minister Gopal Rai.

Despite the state government's claims of selling the vegetable at Rs.30 in its 280 Fair Price Shops, it was not available at many of these. In the market, prices have touched a high of Rs.80 per kg.

Food and Civil Supply Minister Asim Ahmed Khan attributed the non-availability of onions to the lack of coordination between Delhi Police and the city government.

"The trucks carrying onions from outside were not coming directly. We have spoken to the Delhi Traffic Police about the smooth passage of these trucks," he said.
