The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has seized more than seven kg of gold, worth Rs two crore, smuggled into India from Bangladesh, an official said on Wednesday.
About 50 gold bars bearing foreign markings, collectively weighing 7412.43 grams, and valued at over Rs 2.04 crore were found from three accused persons and seized, the official said.
Acting on a tip-off, the agency intercepted ablack Alto car from the eastern part of the city and arrested three accused - Indrajit Biswas, Rabiul Islam and Selim Molla - hailing from India-Bangladesh border areas.
The seized gold bars were admittedly smuggled into India from Bangladesh and were given to these accused persons for further delivery at Kolkata.A
All the three were produced before the court and have been remanded judicial custody till September 21.
In the current financial year, the agency has, in West Bengal and the northeastern states, as seized over 150 kg of gold valued at close to Rs 44 crore in the market, smuggled from Bangladesh, Myanmar and even Bhutan.
