Addis Ababa, Aug 11 (IANS/MAP) South Korea has announced $1 million humanitarian aid to Ethiopia which is still grappling with a drought caused by El Niño in 2016.
Out of the total assistance, $400,000 will go to Unicef's Humanitarian Action for Children 2017 while $500,000 will go to the Ethiopian Humanitarian Fund (EHF).
The funding also contributes $100,000 to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) to assist Ethiopian returnees from Saudi Arabia.
While Ethiopia continues to recover from the El Niño-induced drought in 2016, low spring rainfall compounded by epidemics and disease, poor harvest and decline of water resources have exacerbated the situation in the country.
The number of people in need of humanitarian aid in the second half of 2017 increased to 8.5 million from 5.6 million in January.
