As many as 10,553 people were killed in road accidents due to drunken driving in 2011, parliament was told Tuesday.

Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Sarvey Sathyanarayana told the Lok Sabha in a written reply that road accidents occur due to the complex interaction of a number of factors which also include intake of alcohol and drugs.

"Intake of alcohol/drugs by drivers resulted in 24,655 road accident and 10,553 fatalities in 2011," he said.

The highest number of drunken driving accidents were reported from Uttar Pradesh followed by Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh.

He said the ministry has requested all the states to remove existing liquor shops along national highways and not to issue fresh licences to liquor vendors for operating shops there.
