'Economy growth to spur demand for packaging sector'

Economic growth, increased urbanisation and hygiene consciousness augurs well for the Indian packaging industry, said a senior official.

"The economy is expected to grow in the coming period. Similarly urbanisation, retail sector are also growing. The hygiene consciousness of the people is also on the rise. These aspects would increase demand for the Indian packaging industry players," Rajeev Ranjan, principal secretary, Highways and Minor Ports, Tamil Nadu said.

He was speaking at the launch function of INDIAPACK 2015 here Friday late evening that was organised by the Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP).

Ranjan said the $24.6 billion Indian packaging industry is growing at about 13-15 percent per annum.

According to N.C. Saha, director IIP, to commemorate the 50th year of the institute, it will be organising INDIAPACK 2015 an exhibition-cum-conference in Mumbai next October.

He said the conference 'World Packaging Congress' with the theme 'Packaging-Global Strategies and Opportunities' is expected to be attended by representatives from 35 member countries of the World Packaging Organisation.

Over 300 exhibitors comprising packaging equipment manufacturers, packaging companies and others are expected to show case their products at the four day exhibition to be held in Mumbai next year.
