Egypt has urged the member states of the UN Security Council (UNSC) to end the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands.
The UNSC should live up to its responsibilities and effectively work to quickly end the Israeli occupation and establish a viable, independent Palestinian state on the pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, said Amr Abul-Atta, Egypt's permanent envoy to the UN, state-run MENA news agency reported Wednesday.
"This is the only solution unanimously agreed to by the world's countries," Abul-Atta said in an open dialogue session of the UNSC Tuesday.
Security cannot possibly be used as a pretext to continue the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands and siege on Gaza, Abul-Atta stressed. This, he said, does not make any sense, citing three wars in Gaza over the past decade.
