Ten companies illegally running call centres under the name of Microsoft to target its users were identified following a complaint made by the multinational technology brand. Two-dozen people, involved in the racket have been arrested, police said on Friday.

A case was registered on the complaint of Nripendra Kashyap, from Microsoft India. It was alleged that many illegal call centres are running in Delhi which are targeting users of Microsoft Windows by fraudulently popping up a message on their screen that their systems have been affected by malware and are compromised.

"In lieu of their bogus services, they charge anywhere between 100-500 dollars from the victims of the fraud," Deputy Commissioner of Police Anyesh Roy said in a statement on Friday.

During the investigation, the officer said, 10 such call centres were identified at Rohini Sector-7, Janakpuri, Dwarka Mod, Kirti Nagar, Moti Nagar, Hari Nagar, Mahipalpur, Shahdara and Okhla Phase-II.

"Incriminating evidence in the form of cheques from customers in the name of Microsoft Tech support, call recordings, virtual dialers, Microsoft Tech support training material, call log transcripts detailing the conversation with victims of fraud, payment gateway records, and servers have been seized."

He said 24 persons, including the owners and team leaders, have been arrested and are being subjected to further interrogation.
