A 32-year-old businessman-politician was found hanging in the basement of his readymade garments showroom on the busy Railway Road in Gurgaon, Haryana, police said Saturday.
The dead businessman was identified as Chitresh Adlakha, a resident of Madanpuri, near his showroom.
"The man came from a financially sound family and was involved in several businesses. He had interests in the share market too," a senior police officer said.
The Adlakha family runs two schools.
"He was found hanging in the basement of his showroom which was being prepared for a call centre. A few employees had started operating from the basement," police said.
The man was discovered hanging late Friday when one of the employees of the call centre walked into the basement. The showroom employees had left for the day by then.
"We don't find any reason for suicide. He was the only son of the Adlakha family and seemed happy," a relative said.
Chitresh had married five years ago. Eight months back, his wife had delivered a baby after having conceived through in-vitro fertilisation.
No suicide note was found and the family did not wish to speak of the incident.
The victim had filed his nomination in the last elections of the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) in 2010, but later withdrawn it in support of the former district Congress president.
The businessman had also been active in social and political activities.
The body was handed over to family members after a post-mortem examination and the viscera was sent for forensic examination.
"Prima facie, it looks like suicide. We are investigating. No complaint was received from the victim's family," a senior police officer said.
